When I was there, I was very surprised to see that the only surviving ancient pagoda in Hong Kong is so near the Tin Shui Wai MTR station. It is right next to the station’s exit D. The contrast of the old and new cannot be starker. Tsui Sing Lau Pagoda (Pagoda of Gathering Stars) was built by the powerful Tang clan in the New Territories 600 years ago, to enhance the Fung Shui of the area as well as to forestall disasters. A statue of Fui Shing (Champion Star) is worshipped on the top floor, which is barred from visiting. Fui Shing was worshiped in ancient China for his ability to give blessings to those pursuing success in the civil servant examinations.
The pagoda is a site on the Ping Shan Heritage Trail (屏山文物徑), where you can have a glimpse of the traditional life of the New Territories in a matter of half day. Signs with explanations are in place along the trail.
Ping Shan is one of the areas in the New Territories where Tang clan was first rooted. Given the power and scale of the clan, a fairly large number of existing heritage sites are related to it. The descendants of the clan still live in Ping Shan.
